I've received a lot of questions today about SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act). People have noticed the black bar across the google homepage and the inability to access wikipedia articles. This is a purposeful blackout.
If you'd like to learn more, wikipedia is actually a great place to go for background on the subject. (This page is exempted from the blackout.)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:SOPA_initiative/Learn_more As always with wikipedia, look towards the bottom of the page for external links and more information.
Basically, the act could have legal implications for many websites, particularly ones that allow user participation. While copyright protection is a serious concern, there's the potential for copyright holders to go after websites that even link to sites that may have violations. It places a lot of pressure on site holders to monitor material that's not hosted on their sites.
Hope this is helpful. Let me know if you'd like to learn more.
