Books are due. So the option is to change my attitude or to change the expectation that books will return of their own accord as the school year winds down. One thing I am looking forward to as more of the collection is digital is less time chasing down students for items they don't always remember borrowing.
Anyway, as I've said 1000 times to students already this week, "I'm not mad. I'm actually really glad you're using the library. I just want the books back. And if you're still reading them, tell me and I'll renew them and stop bugging you."
Oh, and "Don't lie if you've lost the book.
There was a bright stop on the horizon recently when I asked the Middle Schoolers who had books with them in their cubbies and left the building with an Ikea bag chock full of titles. (Even one that had survived a backpack battle with a stick of deodorant. Mmmm...freshness.) Small victories!
