Independent Bookstores

A response in the New York Times to an article about independent bookstores. I've written before on The Tattered Cover, and many of my Denver hours have been spent there. However, as a librarian I buy very few books for myself. Still, there's something about the curation of bookstores, particularly these independent behemoths. There's nothing embarrassing about preferring to preview in a real store rather than online.

The Strand---Rainy afternoon in New York? Go here, and the hours disappear. May sound a bit creepy, but it's worth it. Head to the basement!
Tattered Cover---I want to decorate my house with the furniture from the downtown location. They also serve mate tea, and they are where I first discovered the snark that is Sloane Crosley. It's one of my first destinations in the city
Powell's---Can anyone talk up Powell's enough? I was in Portland for two days this summer, and walked a mile and a half to be there for the opening in the morning. Then repeated the activity at closing. I love that the rooms are arranged by color, and they have new bestsellers side-by-side with older forgotten gems.
Elliott Bay---I liked them better before they moved north, but the Pioneer Square area is surviving nonetheless. They have a full schedule of author visits.
